Kate Wickham says come meet Bernardo Cantu as he discusses his motivation, inspiration and process behind this incredible body of art. He’ll share the meaning behind the exhibition name, “Texican Neo-Tribalismo.” Turns out that it’s not just artistic gibberish; it’s actually an important movement. Bernardo stretches limits, pushes into new reality, while incorporating the colors and textures of his childhood on the Texas coastal bend.

Cain, a singer/songwriter has been performing in a supporting role to her sister, Kelly Brown of Local Honey, in recent years. Prior to that, the sisters performed as Frankly Scarlet, opening shows for the likes of David Bowie & Sarah McLachlan on the Lilith Fair tour. Kimberly has also worked with artists Brian Miller & Reggie Rueffer in various capacities over the years and Cain says naturally all of these artists have lent their talents to the CD portion of the Heaven project which was designed for listeners to get in touch with the exotic dancer spirit within.

Summer Series 10
The annual Summer Series exhibition at Haley-Henman this Saturday features emerging local artists represented by the gallery. This this will be Anthony Bolton and John Bramblitt premier exhibit.
Dorothy Clarke participated in last year’s Summer Series 09 with two series of exceptional prints. For this exhibition, Ms. Clarke shows her versatility and virtuosity in various media by presenting Signs of the Road, a series of new oil paintings depicting signs she has encountered on roads less traveled. This body of work is her story of her fascination of road trips. Her desire to travel eagerly leads her to a road with a spirit of adventure and discovery. Each road contains its own ambiance that affect her deeply, reminding her of when life was simpler. Her paintings are vintage signs that she has come across on one of her many adventures. Each sign tells another story of time.

AT&T Performing Arts Center be gone, you decide!
In light of Mark Nerenhausen leaving the AT&T Performing Arts Center; some of you aren’t going to like this but…Don’t you think it’s time we have a serious discussion about levying all property owners within Dallas County to support the Arts District. I’ll pause here for the collective gasp at City Hall by Council Members at the thought of the “County” being responsible for the Center…...Who knows, perhaps such a drastic measure will cultivate some fresh ideas that are more in keeping with Dallas’ demographic and get more pocketbooks involve. Better still, maybe we should kick the management organization, Performing Arts Center to the curb in regards to promotion. They are only a management company after all. What makes them more special than the Meyerson’s Management Company?

Bikini Protest at Dallas City Hall
In an effort to draw attention to the proposed city budget cuts for Swimming Pools and other quality of life amenities in Urban Dallas, organizers encourage students and young families to join them in swimwear at the fountain in front of City Hall on Wednesday, August 18th from Noon to 1 pm.
Organizer John Fullinwider, feels the city is going too far in restricting access to swimming pools in low-income neighborhoods where many pools have already been closed. At issue are 7 additional pools that are proposed to be cut from the budget. The other 14 locations or 2/3’s of our pools have already been closed permanently according to the City of Dallas website.
If arguably, families are not taking advantage of pool use during the day like they do at other neighborhood pools such as Tietze Park in the M-Streets where there are more stay at home Parents or Parents who work out of their home; maybe it’s time we look at how we operate our pools rather than closing them for lack of use and forcing families to send their kids on a bus to take advantage of popular municipal pools like Tietze.

The Second Program Video Installation
The Video Association of Dallas, the Conduit Gallery and the Dallas Museum of Art present the biannual exhibition “The Program,” a collection of contemporary video art from nationally and internationally known artists David Askevold, Jonathan Gitelson, Matthew Day Jackson, Luke Murphy, Jason Rhodes, Erin Shirreff and Bill Viola
Curator Charles Dee Mitchell said “from its inception this was to be a “theme-free” exhibition. I don’t really like theme shows, shows where part of the work invariably seems to have been selected just because it fit the chosen theme, and other work has been distorted in the effort to wedge it in and make it fit. I prefer exhibitions where a group of pieces simply play well together, and if there are dots that may be connected it is up to the viewer to connect them.
